Preparing for a First Date with Someone You Met on an App

A first date is a chance to see whether you feel comfortable talking in person. You do not need an elaborate programme. A clear plan, a public place, and control over your own transport help you focus on the meeting.

Agree on the place and time

Choose somewhere convenient for both of you, rather than only near one person’s home. A café or public dining venue can be a starting point, provided you both agree and can check the information beforehand.

You might message: “I’m free on Saturday afternoon. Would you like to meet at a café near this area?” Then confirm the address, meeting time, and approximate duration. Check the venue’s current opening hours and prices before going.

Prepare transport and costs

Arrange your own transport so you can arrive and leave when you want. You do not need to give a new contact your home address. Tell someone you trust about your plan and keep your phone charged.

Discuss costs if that makes you more comfortable. For example: “Shall we each pay for our own order?” Do not assume who will pay based on gender or nationality.

If the other person changes the plan to a private location at the last minute, you can suggest keeping the meeting public or arranging another day.

Bring a few topics, not a test

You can remember an interest the other person mentioned and ask more about it. Simple questions such as “What made you happy this week?” or “What do you enjoy doing on a day off?” give both people an opportunity to share.

Listen and talk about yourself too. You do not need to press for information about income, marriage, or private matters. If there is a language difference, use short sentences and ask again when you do not understand.

Decide your next step based on how you feel

You can end the date at the planned time. If you want to meet again, be specific: “I really enjoyed today’s conversation. Would you like to meet again next week?”

If you do not want to continue, you can reply briefly and politely. When someone behaves uncomfortably or crosses a boundary, you have the right to leave and use the platform’s blocking and reporting features where available.
